As the crisp autumn breeze sweeps through the streets of Stone County, a unique tradition brings the community together in a delightful, artistic celebration—the annual Scarecrow Convention. This beloved event, which began in 2010 thanks to the creative efforts of the Pine Hill Ladies in Wiggins, has grown into a highly anticipated festival that allows businesses, schools, churches, families and organizations to showcase their own imaginative fall-themed scarecrow displays.

2023 3rd Place Winner: Stone Elementary

What started as a fun local tradition has grown into a beloved event throughout Wiggins, Mississippi, where both residents and visitors eagerly await the unveiling of the season’s scarecrows. These charming and often whimsical displays appear outside homes, businesses, and community spaces, transforming Stone County into a vibrant fall wonderland.

Mike Cain, Pine Hill Chair, initiated this idea after seeing scarecrow displays with her family during a visit to the Smoky Mountains.

“I think the Scarecrow Convention inspires others to take a little pride and make an effort to beautify the city,” Cain said.

The Pine Hill Ladies feel that Cain’s comments resonate as they distribute flyers to all businesses and organizations in the city of Wiggins asking them to show their pride and community spirit through their participation in the annual Scarecrow Convention throughout the City of Wiggins. This convention is one of the reasons the Pine Hill Ladies received the Stone County Economic Development Partnership’s volunteer of the year award in 2014.

The current Pine Hill Ladies are: Mike Cain (Chair), Mary Webb, Nina Shaw, Ruth Ford, Eva Ruth Simpson, Sofe Husley, Shelly Pulliam, Pat Solomon, Dee Dee Hatten and Terry Turan. Past members include Carole Pearce, Edyth Baer, Norma Batson, Christa Seal and Karen Wallsmith.

A Tourist Attraction in the Making

2019 Entry: Animal Care Clinic of Wiggins

This year, the Pine Hill Ladies are excited to take the Scarecrow Convention to new heights, turning it into a can’t-miss tourist attraction. Imagine driving through Stone County as you would a holiday light tour, but instead of twinkling lights, you’re greeted by a variety of uniquely designed scarecrows—from the funny and whimsical to the artistic and traditional. It’s a perfect family-friendly activity, encouraging visitors to explore the hidden gems of our county while celebrating the creativity. The fun doesn’t stop with just viewing the scarecrows. Voting for your favorites is a key part of the convention. Locals and tourists alike can vote for the People’s Choice Awards, which will determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Voting will take place on StoneCounty.com from October 2-16. Additionally, a panel of three judges will select the Judges’ Awards, and there’s even a Superhero Award for outstanding community service.

To enhance this years’ experience, the convention proudly unveils a newly designed logo that encapsulates the spirit of the event. The vibrant new design features playful elements that reflect the charm and creativity of the scarecrows, inviting everyone to join in the celebration. This refreshing logo not only represents the convention but also symbolizes the unity and enthusiasm of our community, making it a memorable emblem that will be showcased throughout this year’s festivities.
